SE7EN NARRATIVE

Sugar rush

How do the micro elements combined to create meaning in the clip from Sugar rush?

In this clip of "Sugar Rush" The Camera-work is very rapid and fast. The fast-paced camera creates a sense of unsettled and uneased which then contributes to the mood of anger since when a person is mad or frustrated his/her eyes are often sharp and fast and their emotions are often uncontrolled and wild,The fast movement emphasizes on the emotions of Kim who is feeling angry at that moment. The Extreme close-up that is used regularly adds on the attention and focus to the viewer. It also creates an atmosphere making the viewer concentrating on the idea of anger since the object such as clothings which is a memorial of Kim's crush , Sugar is being thrown onto the bed; This intensifies the action making the action seems powerful since it is a focus in the scene.

The editing that is often used is the jump cut that that creates tension and a great impact. It makes the scene disconcerting when a shot is being shifted to another shot (between 2 shots) which adds on to the fast -paced and the rapid movement of the camera-work.

In this clip Mise-en-scene includes clothes. The bright colored clothes suggests that she is a regular teenage girl. The setting also takes place in a bedroom; this is known to the viewer since the room contained beds and pillows. The posters on her walls suggests that she is a teenager and the purple wall suggests she is quite girly since pink is associated with girls and feminine. Her apple mac computer also suggests that is middle classed and quite wealthy since iMac is often affordable to some people since it is a costly product. Her clothing that she is wearing most of the time suggests that she is a student because of the formal uniform she wears. Most of the part at the beginning clothes and objects are being thrown most of the time. This is suggestive of the objects is being portrayed as Sugar and is used to release Kim's anger.

The sound that is being used contributed a lot in creating an atmosphere to this clip. The sound that is used is a narrative voice which consists throughout the clip. The language that is used is not fomalr at all and is rather slang. There are some rude words present as well. This use of word illustrates to us that Kim is mad at Sugar and losing her temper since people often swear when they're angry with something. The use of this non-diagetic voice creates a sense of the subconcsious mind talking to herself like as if she is having thought tracking. This narrating voice makes us, the viewer views the clip from a narrative aspects.Another non-diagetic sound that is used is also the sound of the "Seagull"This is suggestive of Kim's location of her settlement that perhaps she ould be living near the coast where she will be encountering many seagulls by the beach.

AS One minute film - Evaluation

1) How did your group work as a team?

Everyone was given a role to play and each of the members rotated around to use the camera.

2) Explain how you organised and prepare for the project. What went well, what could have been improved?

The organisation in our team was really good since everyone knew what they had to do for example : one person has to bring props the other has to bring camera. Also, The thing that went really well was the sound effects. The soundtrack that was chosen matches well with the storyline as well as the colour effects.I think the monochrome colour strongly emphasizes the creepiness of the story as it creates an ominous atmosphere contributing to the theme of horror and anxiety. What I believe could have been improved is the voice could have been better. The voice from each character is very minimum and quiet. Some parts could be hardly heard since we didnt have the equipment to do the voice recording properly. The other thing that could be done could be using a high-quality camera while filming to allow important amount of details to be able to be displayed throughout the film for example : the details of the blood to make the film seems more professional. In some parts the camera moves too fast that it creates confusion and dizziness to the viewer.

3) What difficulties did you face when filming? How did you overcome them?
The things that I found challenging was to achieve a realistic shot of the running scene since it's really hard to catch up with the runninng and keeping the camera not too wobbly at the same time. But we overcome this by setting out a plot of where the camera will be running.

4) What difficulties did you face when editing? How did you overcome them?
The difficulties that we faced was that the video that we took some parts couldn't be connected together. This creates problem since it makes the film very confusing and seems to have no continuity. But we overcome it by slowing down the film making the video longer and carefully connect the parts together.

5) If you were to repeat the project again what would you do differently?

If i could repeat the project again and do something differently I would do a new film instead because I don't feel that this movie is effective enough. Also, I would try to make the film exactly 1 min.

6) What aspects of the final production are you happy with? What could be improved?
In my opinion I think the editing is quite good since it matches with a horror film.As well as the soundtrack that is used.It is very effective at creating suspense and thrill to the film. The camera work is also quite good. There are variety of angles as well as the lighting.
be the shakiness of the camera. This time the camera will be less shaky and more still.
